Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

TapAtlas (“we”, “us”) is a daily geography quiz that runs in your browser. You can play without creating an account. Contact: [email protected].

2. What we collect

• Guest player id & board name — stored in your browser (localStorage) so scores and streaks can continue on this device.
• Game scores — when you finish a daily round we may store your score, display name, and streak on our server (file storage or Supabase) for the leaderboard and challenges.
• Coarse country — if the host reports a country with the request (for example Cloudflare), we may store that two-letter code with a finished score. We do not ask for GPS, and that code is only shown on a private operator page.
• Share links — we count when a challenge link is opened, and whether someone finishes that day’s round from it.
• Technical logs — standard server logs (IP address, user agent, timestamps) may be kept briefly for reliability and abuse prevention.
• Map / font providers — the globe and fonts load from third-party CDNs (for example OpenFreeMap / CARTO-related map data and Google Fonts). Those providers may receive your IP address as part of a normal web request.

We do not ask for your email, phone number, or precise GPS location to play.

3. Cookies and similar technologies

We use browser storage (including cookies where required by our tools) for:

• Remembering your guest player id and display name
• Saving your in-progress daily round on this device
• Advertising and measurement cookies if Google AdSense (or a similar partner) is enabled — see section 4
• Optional analytics cookies if we enable a traffic analytics product — see section 5

You can clear site data in your browser settings. That will reset your local guest id and any unfinished round on this device.

4. Advertising (Google AdSense)

We may show ads through Google AdSense (and related Google advertising services). Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to:

• Serve ads on this site
• Personalize ads based on your interests and prior visits (where allowed)
• Measure ad performance and prevent fraud

You can manage ad personalization via Google Ads Settings and, where available, industry opt-outs such as the YourAdChoices tool. Blocking cookies or using ad blockers may limit personalization; some ads may still appear as non-personalized.

If we offer a paid “remove ads” option, subscribers will not see AdSense inventory while their subscription is active.

5. Analytics

We may use privacy-conscious or mainstream analytics (for example Plausible, Cloudflare Web Analytics, or Google Analytics) to understand visits, countries, and which pages are used. Analytics may use a cookie or a similar identifier.

When a specific analytics product is enabled, its name and opt-out link will be listed here. Until then, any measurement is limited to what our host or CDN provides in aggregate server logs.

6. Legal bases and your choices (EEA / UK / similar)

Where those laws apply, we process data to run the game you request (contract / legitimate interest in operating a free quiz), and — for non-essential cookies such as personalized ads or optional analytics — based on consent where required. You may object to certain processing, request access or deletion of server-side score data tied to your player id, or withdraw consent for ads/analytics cookies via browser controls and the links above.

7. Children

The game is a general-audience quiz. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the age required in your country). If you believe a child has submitted data to us, contact us and we will delete it.

8. Retention and security

Leaderboard and challenge records are kept while the service runs and may be pruned over time. Local browser data stays until you clear it. We use standard hosting safeguards; no method of transmission over the Internet is fully secure.

9. Changes

We may update this policy as the product or ad/analytics stack changes. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
